About us

Contributing family members

The descendants of Hudec or Hugyecz, as the name was used by the Hungarian branch of the family, were scattered all over the world, no one remained in Banska Bystrica, nor in Slovakia. Jolán Hugyecz, the eldest of László's 5 siblings, moved to Budapest after the Trianon and his descendants kept all the family archives for nearly 100 years. This is how the family correspondence, documents from the 19th century, hundreds of photos and files related to the life and architectural career of László Hudec has remained.

Dr. Eszter Jánossy and family correspondings

The processing of the archive material began in 2008 and it appeared that Uncle Laci, as everyone in the family called him, was an inspiring and talanted architect and his descendants  living in Budapest became very interested in his biography and architectural achievements. The art historian family member, Dr Júlia Csejdy started to work with his correspondence and documents and written numerous publications, and published together with Luca Poncellini, a Milano based architect, the first Hungarian biography on László Hudec's architectural works. The documentary film director and TV journalist relative, Réka Pigniczky made a 26 minutes long documentary of the journey of the Hungarian architect of Shanghai along the lines of his letters, supplemented by stories of Alessa and Theo (Hudec's children). His famous buildings in Shanghai were brought to life in contemporary photos in their present conditions. These artistic photographs of Dr Ábel Szalontai, a family relative, featured in the Architecture-Hudec-Shanghai exhibition in Budapest. Following the first content and photo processing, media designer Virág Csejdy, collateral relative of László Hudec, created the Hudec Interactive Encylopedia, directed and curated further exhibitions, conferences and workshop programs in Hungary, in Shanghai and in Banska Bstrica as well.

Establishing foundation from project

Our first voluntary organization and works was called Hudec Heritage Project. The members of the Budapest family were the founder of the non-registered project group that produced sevaral publications and programs. Recognizing the cultural and diplomatic capacities of Hudec's legacy for the Sino-Hungarian and Slovakian-Hungarian relations the project took an official form in 2013 and the NGO Hudec Cultural Foundation was established. In the framework of a non-profit operation, we are active participants in cultural and educational projects. Our goal is to publish and make known all over the world Hudec's legacy, art works inspired by his life and work, and build a publicly accessible, digitalized archive of the Budapest based materials.
